Car Insurance Coverage Types

Every auto policy is built from a handful of coverage types. Knowing what each one pays for is the first step to buying the right amount of protection without overpaying.

Required in most states

Liability Coverage

Pays for injuries and property damage you cause to others. Split into bodily injury and property damage limits. The legal minimum almost everywhere, but minimums are often too low to cover a serious crash.

Repairs your car

Collision Coverage

Pays to repair or replace your own vehicle after a collision, regardless of fault. Usually required if you finance or lease, and worth keeping while your car still holds significant value.

Non-crash damage

Comprehensive Coverage

Covers theft, vandalism, fire, hail, flooding, and animal strikes. Often bundled with collision as "full coverage," and inexpensive relative to the protection it provides.

Liability + collision + comprehensive

Full Coverage

Not a single product but the common name for combining liability, collision, and comprehensive. Recommended for newer, leased, or financed vehicles where a total loss would be costly.

Protects against bad drivers

Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist

Pays your costs when an at-fault driver has no insurance or too little. Critical in states with many uninsured drivers and often very affordable to add.

๐Ÿ“‰
For financed cars

Gap Insurance

Covers the difference between what you owe on a loan and the carโ€™s actual cash value if it is totaled early. Most useful in the first few years of a new-car loan.

How Much Coverage Do You Need?

The right mix depends on your car, your finances, and your risk tolerance. Drivers with a new or financed vehicle usually need full coverage, because a total loss would otherwise leave them paying for a car they can no longer drive. Owners of older, paid-off cars often drop collision and comprehensive once the annual premium approaches the payout they would receive, keeping only liability and uninsured-motorist protection.

Whatever you choose, carry liability limits high enough to protect your assets. State minimums are frequently exhausted by a single hospital visit, leaving you personally responsible for the rest. Comparing several quotes at the same coverage level is the only reliable way to see how much you can save without giving up protection.
